The Zeeman Effect

چکیده

When gaseous mercury is subjected to an electrical discharge, such as in a fluorescent light bulb, street lamp, or laboratory discharge tube, the collisions between the mercury atoms and the electrons are energetic enough to excite one of the 6s electrons to a higher energy state, while the remaining 79 electrons (including the other 6s electron) remain undisturbed. Depending upon which empty shell the excited 6s electron occupies, the excited electron will eventually return to successive lower energy states by emitting packets of light, called photons, whose energy reflects the energy difference between the two levels. That is,

The Zeeman Effect in Hydrogen and Alkali Atoms

The Zeeman effect concerns the interaction of atomic systems with external magnetic fields. A basic understanding of the Zeeman effect is needed for many aspects of modern research in atomic physics. In addition, the Zeeman effect played an important historical role in the development of quantum mechanics, leading to the discovery of spin, the g-factor of the electron, and the Thomas precession...

A comprehensive model using modified Zeeman model for generating ECG signals

Developing a mathematical model for the artificial generation of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals is a subject that has been widely investigated. One of its uses is for the assessment of diagnostic ECG signal processing devices. So the model should have the capability of producing a wide range of ECG signals, with all the nuances that reflect the sickness to which humans are prone, and this ...

Investigating the Zeeman Effect: A Deeper Look

The Zeeman effect was first discovered in the laboratory by Pieter Zeeman, a Dutch physicist (see Figure 1), who effectively proved the theory put forth by Hendrik Lorentz that light emitted in the presence of a magnetic field, if polarized, would be affected. The pair were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1902. This discussion will focus specifically on specific examples of Zeeman splitti...

مطالعه امکان اندازه گیری میدان مغناطیسی ستاره چشمه درعبور از خط سوزان

In a microlensing event, at caustic crossing, flux of a spot can be magnified several times with respect of the source star. This magnification contrast provide a unique opportunity to measure the magnetic field over a source star. In this work we investigate possibility of magnetic field detection through the Zeeman effect when a source crosses a caustic line. Using Fourier analysis, one can s...

Zeeman splitting in OH megamasers

We detected significant Zeeman splitting in the 1667MHz OH megamaser emission from four ultraluminous galaxies. These detections, in addition to being the first extragalactic detection of the Zeeman effect in an emission line, suggest that OH megamasers are excellent extragalactic magnetometers.

Zeeman Effect in Mercury

Michael Faraday first examined atomic spectra under the influence of a magnetic field in 1862 without much success. It would prove to be his final experimental attempt. Upon discovery of this fact, Pieter Zeeman again attempted the procedure in 1896, and was led to the startling conclusion that spectral lines seemed to split into multiple components in the presence of a magnetic field. Known as...
